Rising Demand in Vietnam’s Agricultural Machinery Market Signals Strong Growth Potential
Date:
Recently, a working group led by the China Agricultural Machinery Distribution Association (CAMDA) completed a seven-day in-depth market field visit and business matching mission in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam. This mission not only understood the market dynamics but also sent a clear signal: Vietnam is currently in a critical window period for agricultural mechanization upgrades, presenting unprecedented systematic opportunities for agricultural machinery enterprises to enter the market.

During the field visit, the Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development (DCRD) of Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture revealed that, although the Vietnamese government places strong emphasis on agricultural mechanisation, domestic manufacturing capacity can meet only around 30% of national demand, with the remaining 70% reliant on imports. This creates substantial market opportunities for international agricultural machinery manufacturers.
In particular, Vietnam’s key agricultural sectors, including rice, sugarcane, fruit production, and aquaculture, demonstrate an urgent need for high-efficiency, intelligent machinery tailored to smallholder farming systems.
Vietnam is one of the world’s largest rice exporters, the leading global producer of sugarcane and cassava, and the second-largest exporter of fishery products worldwide. The Vietnamese government places strong emphasis on agricultural mechanisation and has made significant efforts to support the research, development, and innovation of agricultural machinery, as well as the promotion and adoption of advanced agricultural technologies.
Potential Demand in the Vietnamese Market
Vietnam’s agricultural sector remains largely characterised by traditional farming practices. However, with continued economic development, an increasing number of farmers are shifting towards the cultivation of cash crops such as sugarcane, bananas, and coffee. Due to the
limited availability of large-scale agricultural equipment, production in many areas still relies heavily on manual labour, resulting in extremely low operational efficiency.

According to statistics, Vietnam’s sugarcane production reaches 11.08 million tonnes annually, ranking 17th globally; banana production is 2.51 million tonnes per year, ranking 13th worldwide; and coffee bean production totals 1.95 million tonnes annually, ranking second worldwide.
Direction of Agricultural Mechanisation in Vietnam
Vietnam’s level of agricultural mechanisation has a promising future. Mechanisation is steadily increasing in primary crop production, agricultural product processing, and waste management in agriculture. Moving forward, development will focus on integrating agronomy and agricultural machinery.

Currently, mechanisation of rice planting and harvesting is the primary focus of Vietnam’s agricultural development. At the same time, there is significant potential for mechanisation in sugarcane cultivation, fruit production, and aquaculture. The demand for agricultural
machinery in Vietnam is substantial, although the sector remains at an early
stage of development.
